Bert Fields -- who can reduce a grown-ass man to tears -- has been tapped to cross-examine Donald Sterling in his fight to block the sale of the L.A. Clippers.

TMZ Sports has learned ... Shelly Sterling's lawyer, Pierce O'Donnell, will try the case when it goes to trial ... examining doctors, financial guys and many others. We're told O'Donnell has asked Fields -- his law partner -- to do the honors when Sterling takes the stand.

Fields is known for brutal cross-examination. He would not discuss his strategy, but he did say if the judge allows Donald to challenge the findings of doctors that he isn't mentally competent to run the team, his goal will be to show the judge Donald has lost it ... and that could be brutal.

Fields told us he cross-examined a guy last year who broke down in tears on the stand. He says, "I thought it would have an impact on the jury, and it did ... I won."

The famed lawyer also says it's almost inevitable the tapes first posted on TMZ Sports will be introduced in the trial.

If LeBron James had any plans for a sequel to "The Decision," he should scrap 'em now -- because NBA star Kenneth Faried tells TMZ Sports another televised special would be a HORRIBLE idea.

The Manimal was out in L.A. on Tuesday when we posed the question to him ... would LeBron DARE do another primetime sit down, considering how poorly the first one went over?

Faried was dead set against the idea and seemed to think LeBron would be too.

If Shogo Kubo was going to die, dying while doing a sick skateboarding move would have been the best way to go ... so says his former Z-Boy friend and famed filmmaker Stacy Peralta.

Peralta tells TMZ Sports he was shocked to hear of Kubo's passing, but that he had not seen his former skateboarding friend in over 20 years ... at the premiere of Peralta's documentary, "Dogtown and Z-Boys."

"We were all outsiders, but he was a triple outsider," Peralta told TMZ Sports. "He actually learned to speak English through skateboarding. He didn't have any money, so we were always pitching in for him, but no one cared. As a human, he was incredibly sweet."

Dating an actress is way better than dating a football player ... and Aaron Rodgers proved it Tuesday night in New York City.

Rodgers was Olivia Munn's date to a screening of "Deliver Us From Evil," her new movie. In his role as her boyfriend, Rodgers got to put on a nice suit, hang out with some famous people, and eat and drink for free.

Honolulu PD tells TMZ Sports ... witnesses noticed the 54-year-old was having problems in the water and several people swam out to bring him into shore. Emergency personnel tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead on the beach.

An autopsy will be performed to determine a cause of death, but for now police are saying there is nothing suspicious about it.

It takes a lot to impress UFC middleweight champ Chris Weidman when it comes to fighting ... but CW says Jay Z's performance in the infamous elevator rumble got him some major MMA cred!

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree treated 60 of his football campers to a cajun lunch ... and you know kids in Texas are different than most ... when they dine on fried alligator!

Crabtree held his second youth football camp at Southern Methodist University’s Gerald Ford Stadium this week in Dallas ... and took a bunch of the campers out to Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen for a lunch that would not be recommended by the American Heart Association.

Crabtree footed the bill -- which we're told was at least a grand -- and in addition to the alligator, the kids dined on fish and grits, mozzarella sticks, gumbo, and shrimp salad ... among other things.

Sounds like the kids had a full day.

Nine major health organizations are calling on commissioner Bud Selig and Major League Baseball to totally ban tobacco from ballparks ASAP ... in the wake of Tony Gwynn's death.

TMZ Sports has obtained a letter sent by the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association and seven other major health orgs ... calling on MLB to honor Gwynn's memory by issuing a blanket prohibition on tobacco at the ballpark.

They write, "It is time to take tobacco out of baseball once and for all -- both for the health of baseball players and to set the right example for America's kids."

In 2011, MLB put in certain restrictions on smokeless tobacco, but it's not an all-out ban.

With Gwynn's passing, several players -- including Addison Reed of the Diamondbacks and Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals -- have announced they are quitting dip.
