Conor McGregor's coach says the UFC star has already begun training for Floyd Mayweather -- because Conor truly believes the superfight will go down sometime THIS YEAR.

John Kavanagh joined "Bill and Boz" on Fox Sports News 500 and revealed while "the people in the suits" work on the contracts, Conor's in the gym training for a boxing match.

"In my mind, it's on. That's the mentality we're in," Kavanagh says. "As far as I'm concerned, I really believe it's gonna happen this year."

Kavanagh says training for boxing is MUCH different than training for MMA -- "It's simpler, less skills involved" -- but Conor's up for the challenge.

Dikembe Mutombo is beyond excited Patrick Ewing is taking over as head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas, telling TMZ Sports he owes his career to the Knicks legend.

Mutombo played at Georgetown in the late '80s and when we got him in NYC he couldn't contain his joy about the hiring, saying he considers Patrick to be his mentor and will be right there to support him.

The former heavyweight champion of the world says he respects both guys in their respective sports -- but putting them both in the same ring is a disaster waiting to happen.

Roy Jones Jr. says he's NO LONGER in the cockfighting game -- telling TMZ Sports his roosters are now used to train human fighters ... instead of feathered ones.

Photos have surfaced of rooster cages at Roy's Florida compound -- leading some to suspect the boxing legend was involved with underground bird fighting.

But Roy says the rumors are 100% false -- insisting he quit the sport when it was outlawed in 2008 in Louisiana, the last U.S. state to ban the sport. Although he enjoys cockfighting, Roy says he would never break the law.

Roy says he would love to move to a country where the sport is legal -- like Mexico or Puerto Rico -- but he's too busy training boxers ... and uses the birds as part of his workout regimen.

Picture that scene from "Rocky II." Roy says he's been using that training method for decades and it helps with hand eye coordination.

As for claims cockfighting is animal abuse, Roy is adamant he's not forcing the birds to do anything they're not biologically programmed to do ... and says most cockfighters love their birds like their own children.

Michael Irvin says he did NOT have any sort of sexual relations with the person accusing him of sexual assault ... telling TMZ Sports he treated the woman like family in the years before the incident.

Irvin appeared on the "TMZ Sports" TV show (airs tonight on FS1) and said he's NEVER had any sort of sexual relationship with his accuser ... including on the night in question.

"She was like my niece ... a good friend," Irvin said. "I was hurt to hear about [the allegation]."

As we previously reported, Irvin is being investigated for allegedly sexually assaulting a 27-year-old woman in his Florida hotel room on March 21. Irvin says he believes video evidence will prove his innocence.

Ray Rice is all about working with student athletes -- but he's not looking for a coaching gig ... he's focused on mentoring.

We know Ray recently met with a high school football coach in NJ -- who happens to be Rice's former college teammate -- but it was not about a job on the coaching staff.

We're told the two were discussing Ray speaking to the team about the importance of making the right decisions ... just as Ray has done at major colleges around the country including Florida State, Ohio State, USC and more.

One of Ray's close friends says the running back has received positive feedback from students and school officials and feels strongly about continuing to work with young people.

As far as coaching somewhere down the line, anything's possible ... but for now, Ray feels he's more effective in classrooms than on the sidelines.

Michael Irvin says he did NOT sexually assault a woman at a Florida hotel -- and claims his legal team has video evidence that will prove his innocence.

TMZ Sports broke the story ... a 27-year-old woman accused Irvin of sexually assaulting her at a hotel in Florida on March 21.

Irvin says the allegations are the devil's work -- "He is trying to shake my faith in people. I can not let him prevail."

As for the video, Irvin says surveillance footage from the hotel will show him and his accuser leaving the room together ... "There was no one passed out in that room."

Irvin says he hasn't spoken with the accuser since the alleged incident and she told him she doesn't remember the details of the evening in question.

"I do remember," Irvin says ... "Nothing happened."

Irvin says the woman had been a friend for a long time before the incident and he would never do anything to harm her.

Floyd Mayweather will still be welcome at his daughter's cheerleading events -- despite the showdown with officials over the weekend ... TMZ Sports has learned.
