Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson told police he was reaching for a dropped cell phone when he lost control of his car and smashed into another vehicle head-on early Sunday morning ... cops say.

Shaq -- the team's 2015 1st round draft pick -- was behind the wheel of a 2016 Chevy SUV which slammed into a 2004 Lexus SUV driven by former Duke QB Anthony Boone at 7:45 AM.

When cops arrived to the crash scene near Shaq's Charlotte-area home, the NFL player was given a breathalyzer -- which turned up traces of alcohol ... but cops say it was well BELOW the legal limit.

"He had some residual left over from the night before, but nothing where it was impairing or anything like that,” Sgt. Ben Miller of the State Highway’s Union County told the Charlotte Observer.

TMZ Sports also spoke with law enforcement officials who say Shaq said he had been playing music off his cell phone but dropped it ... and that's when he made the ill-fated decision to reach down and pick it up.

Officials tell us Boone was not wearing a seat belt -- and was hospitalized for a broken pelvis and broken ribs.

Shaq told police he was not seriously injured. He was not arrested -- but was cited for crossing the center lane.

Call him Snoop Curry ... 'cause the Dogfather did his best Steph impression at a celeb hoops game in Michigan this weekend ... going NOTHIN' BUT NET on a half-court shot.

The game was all to raise money for people suffering from the Flint water crisis ... and Snoop and Mo Peterson were given keys to the city for putting the whole thing together.

LSU's beloved Siberian-Bengal tiger mascot, Mike VI, has been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer ... and vets believe he only has 2 years to live ... school officials announced.

The 10-year-old tiger has been receiving treatment from a team of specialists ever since his caretakers noticed a tumor on his face earlier this month.

Officials say Mike has spindle cell sarcoma -- which is unlikely to spread to other areas of his body ... but it's a fatal condition nonetheless.

LSU says Mike is receiving the best care possible -- and they've already drawn up a battle plan to make sure Mike lives out his final days as comfortably as possible. Without treatment, officials say Mike would only have 1 to 2 months to live.

Good news for Fat Joe ... Charles Oakley says he accepts the rapper's apology for disrespecting Anthony Mason.

You know the backstory ... Fat Joe outed Mason last week as the guy Biggie Smalls claimed he robbed in "I Got a Story to Tell." Oakley was pissed and blasted Joe. Joe apologized Monday morning.

Now, Oakley is responding ... telling TMZ Sports, "I accept his apology. Fat Joe broke bread with Mason and I."

Nyquist -- the winner of the Kentucky Derby -- is still battling a fever ... but his team believes he'll beat the illness and WILL compete at the Belmont Stakes next month.

We spoke with Nyquist's assistant trainer, Jack Sisterson, who tells us the champion thoroughbred still has an elevated temperature, as he did following the Preakness, but the team believes it's not that serious.

"Nyquist is going to be fine," Sisterson tells us ... "The plan is to run in the Belmont [on June 11th]."

"These fevers happen sometimes, but not often."

Andre Berto is totally down to take on the winner of a fight that doesn't exist yet ... saying he'd gladly take on the victor in the Canelo Alvarez/GGG mega-fight ... if it ever happens.

We got Berto out in Beverly Hills and asked him about the fight ... which is the second biggest dream fight out there (Mayweather/McGregor #1) and who he thinks would take it.

Ex-NBA player Bo Kimble is pleading with Chris Bosh ... RETIRE IMMEDIATELY ... saying he doesn't want to see Bosh die on the court like his friend and college teammate Hank Gathers.

The Heat shut Bosh down on February 9th when the clotting issues that ended his '14-'15 season returned ... this time showing up in his calf.

Bosh is reportedly unhappy with the decision ... and feels he's healthy enough to resume his playing career.

Kimble -- who was present when Hank Gathers died during a college game in 1990 -- thinks returning to the league is a bad idea for Bosh.

"There are so many other things he could do with his life. Hank Gathers had the same thing, Hank could have been a comedian, and actor or did speaking engagements. It’s not worth the risk. I would just say absolutely not, don’t do it."

Gathers was aware of his heart ailment and decided to keep playing anyway ... and Bo says Chris has the chance to make a decision Gathers couldn't.

"If Hank had the ability to do it again he wouldn't have paid the ultimate price ... I am sure [Bosh] has children and they are going to need their father around as much as possible."

We also spoke to Hank's brother Derrick who echoed Kimble's sentiments.

"To this day I am just getting over the loss of my brother ... just fall back and retire."

Johnny Manziel was removed from a Vegas club after the former NFL QB allegedly hauled off and punched a guy.

Witnesses inside Jewel Nightclub at the Aria tell TMZ Johnny was in a VIP booth near the stage Friday night. Drake showed up for a surprise performance and club goers started to push and shove to get up front. Our sources say Johnny got pushed and turned and slugged the club goer.

You can see in the video the guy Johnny allegedly punched tries going after Manziel ... but a security guard steps in between to break things up.

However, we're told Manziel got the boot shortly after the scuffle.
