Robert Downey Jr. Martial Arts Master Says Kung Fu a Key to Sobriety

Published | Updated

Robert Downey, Jr. used a rigorous form of Chinese martial arts to help beat his addiction, and the master who taught him couldn't say enough good things to a judge and California Governor Jerry Brown to support his pardon.

Sifu Eric Oram, who teaches Wing Chun Kung Fu, a "Chinese Boxing System," wrote a moving letter in support of Downey's pardon. Oram says when he met the actor 12 years ago, he had little hope for him.

Downey had contacted him and wanted to take lessons, but Oram, who learned from the mentor and teacher of Bruce Lee, felt Robert's addiction was a losing battle. Oram was reluctant to take Downey on, but the actor was persistent, freely acknowledging he needed help.

Oram contacted a woman who once worked with Robert in rehab, who told him Downey was a "hopeless addict," adding, "He will never change, nor does he want to."

Nevertheless, Downey became a student, and the 2 developed a close bond over the years and the teacher even worked with his student on 17 films.

Oram says Downey used the discipline to "rewire his mind and body," adding, "It's difficult to recognize the Robert that stepped into my academy 12 years ago."

TMZ broke the story, Governor Brown gave Downey a full pardon on Xmas eve from his drug convictions.

Bill Romanowski Yeah, Odell Played Dirty ... But I've Seen Worse!

Published | Updated

Interesting commentary on the Odell Beckham suspension from Bill Romanowski -- who says, "Was it dirty? Ya ... but I've seen worse."

We called up the ex-NFL star to ask for his take on the NY Giants WR, who was punished for his hits on Panthers DB Josh Norman. Here's what Bill said:

"I think it was two guys battling hard the entire game. There are a lot of dirty blocks and things done on the field. They clearly got in his head and he had a crazed mentality and was out of control. Was it dirty? Ya, but I've seen worse."

"When I hit Kerry Collin's and busted his jaw in 5 or 6 places he had blood spilling out of his face mask. If you are going to suspend Beckham for that then I should have been kicked out of the league."

Romanowski added, "My issue is... What about when people go high on somebody and knock someone out with a concussion, but they aren't suspended?"

Beckham was suspended 1 game for his actions. He has since apologized -- calling his behavior "embarrassing."

Jahlil Okafor Knocked Down Before Gun Pulled ... Cops Say

Published | Updated

A seemingly drunk Jahlil Okafor was knocked to the ground before he had a gun pulled on him during an altercation in Philly back in October ... this according to an incident report obtained by TMZ Sports.

The two National Park Service officers involved in the incident have finally given official statements describing exactly what they saw the night Okafor had a gun pulled on him.

According to documents, two officers noticed Okafor -- who appeared intoxicated -- stumbling down the street in an area famous for nightlife while two friends held him up around 2:20 AM on October 4th.

The officers say the guys began to yell at each other -- and at one point, Okafor broke away from the group and started to bang on the back of a black Chevy Camaro.

Cops say they witnessed the driver of the car get out and strike Okafor -- causing him to fall in the street.

A witness had previously told CSNPhilly that Okafor punched the driver of the car through an open driver's side window -- but the officers made no mention of that in their report.

After Okarfor was knocked to the ground, cops say a 2nd man approached the NBA star and pointed a gun at him.

One officer says he drew his own weapon and shouted, "Police ... get on the ground, drop the gun."

The suspect ran away -- and reportedly ditched the gun, which was recovered the next day by Philly PD.

So far, no arrests have been made. A rep for Okafor had no comment.
